She began drawing around the age of five and won her first art competition in the second grade, where her work was featured in the Oak Grove Lower Elementary annual. While a student at Oak Grove High School, she won several local, state and national awards, including best of show for the Mississippi Congressional Art Competition. This piece was later displayed in the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.
